Temperature
Arracacha is a cool tropical highland root crop. Growth is best around 14-21C, with a practical center near 17.5C, and sources converge on a broad tolerance of about 10-28C. Embrapa describes best production in mild high-altitude Brazilian regions, while Andean references place the crop mainly between 600 and 3500 m elevation. Heat is the larger risk: warm roots favor bacterial soft rot, and sustained temperatures above the mid-20s C reduce storage-root quality.
Humidity
No controlled arracacha paper defines an exact relative-humidity optimum, so the previous 82-87.5% range was treated as regional climate data rather than a strict requirement. Colombian and Andean production areas are humid, but Cultivariable also reports meaningful drought tolerance once plants are established.
Light
Arracacha is often described as reasonably shade tolerant, yet field studies show yield improves when canopy radiation interception improves. A photosynthesis study reported high light saturation for field-grown cultivars, so very low indoor light should be avoided.
Airflow
Arracacha-specific airflow trials were not found. The guide therefore uses standard protected-culture airflow only as disease prevention: gentle canopy movement around 0.3-1.0 m/s helps reduce stagnant, saturated air without drying the crop excessively.
Nutrition
Nutrition should be restrained and root-crop oriented. A 270-day omission study found macronutrient stress ranked N > Ca > S > P > Mg > K, making nitrogen and calcium the most critical nutrients, while excessive nitrogen can push shoots at the expense of storage roots.
Propagation
Arracacha is propagated primarily by division of offsets or cormels from the crown. Growers trim offsets to viable buds, cure or dry the cut surfaces briefly, then pre-root them before field transplanting.
Harvesting
Harvest is normally a whole-plant operation when foliage yellows and new shoot production slows, commonly 10-13 months after planting. Some Brazilian cultivars can finish earlier, while traditional highland types may take longer.

Environments
Arracacha is primarily an outdoor tropical-highland or mild-climate field crop. It can work in greenhouses where cool temperatures and a long frost-free season are needed, but indoor production is impractical for storage roots because plants need high light, deep root volume, and nearly a year of growth.
System Compatibility
Traditional soil culture is the only well-verified system. For soilless use, deep drip-irrigated substrate beds are the most plausible option because they provide root volume, aeration, and drainage.
Growing Media
Use deep, loose, well-drained sandy loam as the preferred medium. Multiple sources place suitable pH around 5.0-6.0, with tolerance roughly 4.5-6.5.
Container Specs
Container production is discouraged for harvest roots, but if used for trials or propagation, containers should be at least 40 cm deep and wide with excellent drainage. Storage roots can reach 5-25 cm long and form in clusters around a central crown, so shallow pots underperform.
