Sweet basil is a warm-season herb with an optimal air temperature of approximately 26°C for vegetative growth. Walters et al. (2023) demonstrated that the optimal mean daily temperature for fresh mass production ranged from 32.6°C at low light (DLI 6 mol/m²/d) to 35.5°C at moderate light (DLI 11 mol/m²/d), with fresh mass increasing 3-fold as MDT rose from 23°C to 35.7°C. Growth effectively ceases below 10°C. For seed germination, Zhou and Welbaum (2012) determined the base temperature at 11.8°C, with optimal germination speed at 35°C and a ceiling of 43°C; however, germination becomes unreliable below 20°C. A practical germination range of 20-30°C is recommended. Root zone temperatures between 23-31°C support hydroponic growth. In controlled environments, maintaining 22-28°C provides the best balance of growth rate, essential oil production, and disease resistance.
