About This Plant

Blewit, now treated as Collybia nuda and historically published as Lepista nuda or Clitocybe nuda, is a lilac to purple edible saprotrophic mushroom grown on composted organic matter with casing. It is slow compared with beginner mushrooms and needs cool, moist fruiting conditions, making it best for experienced growers using outdoor beds, cool greenhouses, or controlled trays.

Also known as: Lepista nuda, Clitocybe nuda, Tricholoma nudum, blewit, Blewit, Collybia nuda, collybia-nuda, Collybia-nuda

Nutrient Requirements by Growth Stage

NPK Ratio:0-0-0
N (veg)
0-0 ppm
P (veg)
0-0 ppm
K (veg)
0-0 ppm

Hydroponic NPK ppm targets are not applicable to blewit cultivation. The crop feeds from composted or humus-rich organic substrates, not a recirculating nutrient solution…

Growing Environments

IndoorOutdoorGreenhouseContainer

Blewit is suitable for outdoor beds, cool greenhouses, and controlled containers, but not as a warm indoor herb-style crop. Domestication trials used a mushroom greenhouse, bed casing, pine-needle cover for moisture, and cool 15-22C conditions…

Temperature

Blewit mycelium grows best in the cool room-temperature range rather than warm mushroom-house conditions. Yue et al. measured fastest mycelial growth at 25C, with good growth at 20C, reduced growth at 15C and 30C, and no growth at 35C. In the same domestication trial, fruiting beds were held at 15-22C, with nights near 15C and days near 22C. The existing 20-25C growth range was therefore too narrow for fruiting guidance: use about 20-25C for spawn run, but shift to 15-22C for cropping.

Humidity

Blewit is a soil and litter mushroom, so substrate moisture matters as much as air humidity. Yue et al…

Light

Blewits do not need plant-level light because the crop is a fungus, but fruiting trials used dim scattered light rather than total darkness. Yue et al…

Airflow

Fresh air exchange is useful but should be gentle because blewit beds can dry out. Gaitan-Hernandez and Baez found that filtered gas exchange in liquid oak culture increased mycelial biomass about 1.8 times compared with sealed culture, showing that oxygen availability affects growth…

Hydroponic System Compatibility

DWC NFT Ebb & Flow Drip Kratky Aeroponics

Standard hydroponic systems are not suitable for blewit. DWC, NFT, ebb-flow, drip, Kratky, and aeroponics deliver mineral nutrient solution to plant roots, while blewit requires colonized organic substrate plus casing or soil contact…

Growing Media

Blewit media should be described as organic mushroom substrate, with standard Truleaf media used only as imperfect enum approximations. Yue et al…

Container Specs

Blewit needs shallow beds or trays more than deep plant pots. Yue et al…

Training & Support

Training and support are not applicable to blewit. The crop forms mushrooms directly from colonized substrate and casing rather than producing stems, vines, or canes that can be pruned or trellised…

Propagation

Blewit propagation should be treated as fungal spawn work, not seed germination. Yue et al…

Harvesting

Harvest timing should follow fruit-body maturity rather than plant days-to-harvest. Yue et al…

Planting Calendar

Blewit can be started indoors in any month if sterile culture, substrate preparation, and cool fruiting conditions are available, but outdoor and low-tech production should align with autumn cool-down. Yue et al…

Common Issues

The main production risks are no fruiting, contamination during slow colonization, drying, and wet-surface bacterial problems. Yue et al…
