About This Plant
Cherimoya (Annona cherimola) is a subtropical fruit tree native to the Andes, producing sweet, creamy-textured fruit often called 'custard apple.' It requires hand pollination in most cultivation regions and thrives in mild coastal and highland climates.

Nutrient Requirements by Growth Stage
Cherimoya is a moderate-to-heavy feeder with strong potassium demand, particularly during fruiting. No peer-reviewed hydroponic ppm protocol exists for this species…

Growing Environments
Cherimoya is primarily an outdoor tree for subtropical and Mediterranean climates, commercially grown in Spain, Chile, Peru, California. Greenhouse growing is validated by peer-reviewed research (Higuchi et al., 1998)…
Temperature
Cherimoya is a subtropical highland tree native to the Andes (700-2,400 m elevation) that thrives at mean annual temperatures of 18-26C, with optimal day/night growing temperatures around 20/15C. Temperatures above 30C during flowering severely impair pollen viability and fruit set -- Higuchi et al. (1998) demonstrated that a 30/25C day/night regime produced very low fruit set compared to the 20/15C regime. Matsuda & Higuchi (2015) confirmed that pollen germination peaks at 20C (>90% germination rate) and declines significantly at 30C. Young growing tips are damaged below -2C; mature trees are killed below -4C. The tree requires 50-100 chilling hours (0-7C) to break dormancy properly -- insufficient chilling causes delayed, erratic foliation and poor yields. Seeds germinate optimally at 28-32C with a mean germination time of 17.5 days at 30C.
Humidity
Cherimoya tolerates a wide range of humidity but performs best at 60-85% relative humidity during the growing season. During flowering, humidity of 80-90% at moderate temperatures (around 20C) maximizes pollen viability and stigmatic receptivity…
Light
Cherimoya requires full sun for vigorous growth, fruit set, and flavor development. Aim for at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day…
Airflow
Cherimoya should be protected from strong winds, which interfere with pollination, damage flowers, and cause fruit drop. Gentle air movement (0.3-1.0 m/s) is beneficial for pollination and disease prevention…

Hydroponic System Compatibility
Cherimoya is an outdoor field tree with no documented hydroponic cultivation. Validated protected system: greenhouse with 20L+ soil-based containers (sand:loam 1:1)…
Growing Media
Best on well-drained sandy loam at pH 6.5-7.6 (tolerates 5.0-8.0). Excellent drainage is critical; root rot susceptibility (Armillaria, Verticillium, Phytophthora) in waterlogged soils…
Container Specs
Not recommended long-term (CRFG). Short-term: 45cm depth minimum, 60-75L capacity, excellent drainage…
Training & Support
Train to modified central leader with 4-6 scaffolds at 60-degree angles from 60cm trunk height. Head unbranched trunks to promote branching; remove petioles at desired bud positions…

Propagation
Cherimoya is most reliably propagated by grafting onto seedling rootstock, enabling bearing within 2-3 years. For rootstock, sow fresh seeds at 24-30C; emergence in 3-5 weeks or ~21 days with bottom heat…
Harvesting
Cherimoya is a climacteric fruit harvested by hand while firm. Primary maturity indicator: skin color from dark green to light green/greenish-tan, with cream between segments…
Planting Calendar
Sow seeds indoors February-April at 24-30C. Plant grafted trees in fall (October-November) in frost-free areas; spring (April-May) in marginal climates…
Common Issues
Major diseases: Armillaria root rot (white mycelium under bark, tree death); Dactylonectria root rot (confirmed in Chile); Phytophthora cinnamomi (confirmed in Peru); Verticillium wilt (black vascular streaking). Anthracnose from three Colletotrichum species accounts for ~85% fruit disease…
