How to Grow Arugula Microgreens

Temperature

Keep arugula microgreens cool to moderate: 16-24 C is supported across microgreen extension guidance and controlled arugula studies, with about 20-22 C a practical production target. The current 18 C value is acceptable as a cool-side setting, but it should not be treated as the only optimum because University of Maryland reports rapid Brassicaceae germination around 72 F and controlled arugula trials also grew at warmer conditions.

Humidity

Maintain relative humidity near 60%, with a working range of 50-70% only when trays are vented and airflow is active. Covered trays can speed germination, but leaving covers on after emergence keeps surfaces wet and increases mold and damping-off risk.

Light

After germination, provide moderate to strong light. The existing 16 h photoperiod and 300 umol m-2 s-1 setting gives roughly 17 mol m-2 d-1, an upper production setting that aligns with continuous-light and arugula light studies but is higher than some extension minimums.

Airflow

Dense arugula trays need gentle, continuous air movement rather than strong wind. Use shelf-level fans or horizontal air flow to remove humid boundary layers, discourage disease, and dry leaf surfaces after watering.

Nutrition

Arugula microgreens do not need mature leafy-green fertilizer strength. Direct microgreen evidence supports a low-to-moderate seedling program: water during germination, then about 80-150 ppm N if using inert media or holding trays longer, with P and K closer to microgreen trial values than baby-leaf formulas.

Propagation

Propagate only from seed. Broadcast microgreen seed densely on a shallow moist tray, press it into contact with media, and cover or weight briefly to retain humidity and encourage straight rooting.

Harvesting

Harvest as a single-cut crop when cotyledons are fully expanded and the first true leaves are just emerging, commonly 6-15 days after sowing depending on cultivar, light, and temperature. Cut just above the media line with clean scissors or a sharp knife so roots and media stay out of the crop.

Calendar

Treat arugula microgreens as a year-round protected tray crop, not as a seasonal transplant or field crop. Sow indoors or in a greenhouse in any month, then schedule harvest roughly one to two weeks later.

Environments

Indoor shelves, vertical farms, and greenhouses are the best-supported environments because they control light, moisture, sanitation, and pests. Container or tray culture is required.

System Compatibility

Tray-based ebb-and-flow or bottom-watering systems are the strongest practical fit because they keep the canopy drier than overhead watering. NFT, shallow raft/DWC, and passive Kratky-style systems can work when adapted to mats or trays and kept clean, but they need oxygen and water-quality control.

Growing Media

Use clean shallow soilless media or hydroponic mats. Arugula microgreen studies and extension guides support peat/coir/perlite mixes, vermiculite, rockwool or similar inert mats, and seed-starting mixes.

Container Specs

Use shallow food-safe trays with drainage. A standard 10 x 20 inch tray with about 2.5-4 cm of moist media is enough for arugula microgreens, and a solid bottom tray supports bottom watering.

Training & Support

No structural training is required. Arugula microgreens are harvested before stems become tall enough for staking, trellising, pruning, topping, or netting.

Common Issues

The main risks are damping-off, mold, and legginess. Damping-off appears as collapsed or pinched seedlings at the media line and is favored by wet media, weak light, dense sowing, and poor sanitation.
