About This Plant

Ulluco is a cool-climate Andean tuber crop grown for its brightly colored, waxy, potato-like tubers. Native to the high Andes (2,800-3,800 m), it needs cool temperatures (12-22C), consistent moisture, and shortening days to form tubers on descending stolons, an obligate short-day response that makes photoperiod the master control. It is propagated almost entirely from seed tubers over a long 6-8 month season, with a late autumn-to-winter harvest. The crop is a light feeder that rewards phosphorus at planting and potassium during tuber bulking while resenting excess nitrogen. Its dominant production constraint is viral degeneration: more than 90% of heirloom clones carry tuber-borne viruses, so clean, virus-indexed planting stock is essential.

Nutrient Requirements by Growth Stage

NPK Ratio:100-15-150
N (veg)
85-115 ppm
P (veg)
13-17 ppm
K (veg)
128-173 ppm

Ulluco is a light feeder and resents over-fertilization, which pushes foliage at the expense of tubers. No hydroponic per-stage nutrient study exists for the species, so the solution ppm here follow potato and Andean-tuber analogs and should be treated as low-confidence starting points, not measured ulluco optima…

Growing Environments

IndoorOutdoorGreenhouse

Ulluco is best suited to cool controlled-environment culture - indoor grow rooms or greenhouses where temperature can be held below ~22C and photoperiod can be staged from long days (vegetative) to short days (tuberization). Outdoors it succeeds only in cool highland or cool-temperate climates that mirror its native…

Temperature

Ulluco is a cool-climate Andean tuber that performs best between 12-22C (54-72F), with a cool optimum around 15-18C. It originates from the Andean highlands at 2,800-3,800 m, where cool days and cold nights are the norm. Keep sustained temperatures below a hard ceiling of 24C: above this the plant stalls, tuberization is inhibited, and Verticillium wilt risk rises sharply, and consistently hot conditions (>27C / 80F) cause crop failure. Hot, dry conditions produce leaf cupping and stunted growth. In hydroponic culture, hold both air and root-zone temperature in the cool band and provide shade if ambient temperatures push into the mid-20s.

Humidity

Grow ulluco in cool, moist conditions at 60-80% relative humidity. It likes water and needs consistent root-zone moisture, but the foliage should stay dry - use drip or sub-irrigation rather than overhead watering to avoid leaf wetness…

Light

Photoperiod is the master switch for ulluco and must be managed by stage. It is an obligate short-day plant for tuberization: descending stolons and tubers form only once day length drops to about 12 hours or less (13 h in some varieties), and tuber set is strongly stimulated below 10 hours…

Airflow

Provide moderate, continuous horizontal airflow across the canopy (roughly 0.3-1.0 m/s). Because the crop is grown cool and moist with a 60-80% RH target, still humid air quickly reaches the >80% threshold that triggers powdery mildew and encourages Verticillium…

Hydroponic System Compatibility

✗ DWC✗ NFT✓ Ebb & Flow✓ Drip✗ Kratky✓ Aeroponics

Ulluco forms its edible tubers on descending stolons that need a dark, humid, substrate-bearing zone to enlarge - the same reason field growers earth up (hill) the crop. This shapes soilless-system choice…

Growing Media

Use a loose, light, free-draining, mildly acidic medium that can be topped up (hilled) over the developing stolon zone. A coco coir base, optionally blended with perlite, gives the moisture-retentive yet well-drained, slightly acidic root zone ulluco favors; clay pebbles suit flood or media-bed setups and perlite…

Container Specs

Ulluco is best grown in the ground or a raised bed rather than a pot - its tubers form on shallow stolons that spread sideways and need stem-to-soil contact, so containers give noticeably lower yields. If you must use a container, choose a wide, shallow one (at least ~30 L and 30 cm deep, favoring width over depth),…

Training & Support

Ulluco needs no trellis or staking - it is a low, sprawling plant that covers the ground on its own. The one useful training practice is light hilling: when days shorten and the plant starts dropping descending stolons, mound a little loose compost or soil over the crown to give those stolons more cool, dark space to…

Propagation

Grow ulluco from seed tubers, not seed. Save or buy small, firm tubers and plant whole tubers (or pieces with at least one eye) in spring after your last frost, at a depth about equal to the tuber's diameter; space plants 38-91 cm apart…

Harvesting

Ulluco is a long-season, single-harvest tuber crop - plan on roughly 6-8 months (about 240 days) from planting to a worthwhile yield, with most of the crop bulking late as days shorten. Wait for the tops to tell you: maturity is signaled by natural yellowing and die-back, or the first light frost…

Planting Calendar

Plant seed tubers outdoors in spring once frost has passed (about April-May in the temperate Northern Hemisphere); there is no benefit to planting early. Because ulluco only bulks its main tubers when days shorten to 13 hours or less, after the autumn equinox, it is harvested late - from mid-November, with the best…

Common Issues

Ulluco's most important problem is not a single pathogen but a viral degeneration complex carried in its tubers: because the crop is propagated vegetatively, viruses accumulate generation after generation, and more than 90% of heirloom clones test positive. Documented viruses include Papaya mosaic and Ulluco mosaic…
